  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Chill your ice cream maker bowl for at least 24 hours.
  2. Whisk together egg yolks and sugar in a medium bowl until smooth.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk and salt; remove from heat just before boiling.
  4. Gradually whisk hot milk into the egg mixture, then return to the saucepan. Cook over low heat until thickened (3–5 minutes) and strain into a bowl.
  5. Stir in heavy cream, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
  6. Churn the chilled mixture in your ice cream maker according to instructions until soft-serve consistency is reached.
